“Musicking”, a term coined by Small (1998)*, emphasises the nature of music as “an activity” and “not a thing”, which is “something that people do” . Small proposed that “to music is to take part, in any capacity, in a musical performance, whether by performing, by listening, by rehearsing or practicing, by providing material for performance (which is called composing), or by dancing” .
This resource has been developed in the spirit of encouraging students to experience music through active participation.
Musicking Cards serves as prompt cards for music teachers to facilitate musical thinking and creative expression in students through the music-making process. It aims to encourage exploration and play through the variety and surprises that the cards offer, while inculcating in students the musical vocabulary to describe and give voice to their ideas.
The brief was to create a visual system that help put 3 different card sets together in one, with consideration of durability for use by students and teachers. A roll top gift box concept is designed with a unique card slot base made of EVA foam to hold the cards upright. The box holds a massive deck of 343 cards with 3 varying sizes.
Besides using color, the edges of the cards are given “dog ears” to create a distinct visual system, highlighting the number of cards base on denomination.
